Hardwood Considerations:

Construction

Solid hardwood is consistent wood throughout, while engineered hardwood has a hardwood veneer on a cross-ply wood base, providing dimensional stability. Engineered hardwood is recommended for dry climates like Arizona due to its versatility.

Wood Species

Hardwood flooring offers various species, each with distinct visual characteristics regarding graining, color, and wood hardness. Colors vary from light to dark based on staining and species.

Performance/Finish

Today's engineered hardwood floors boast a factory finish, ensuring increased performance and consistent quality, a distinction from on-site finished floors. Popular choices feature an aluminum-oxide finish for enhanced scratch and gouge resistance.

Installation

Baker Bros advises professional installation for a hassle-free, beautiful floor finish. Hardwood is ideally installed with a direct glue-down method, ensuring stability and performance. Floating is an option for specific hardwood floors, depending on the situation.

Budget

The beauty and longevity of hardwood does come at a cost higher than vinyl and laminate, but at $6-$13 per square foot the value is amazing. Project costs should also include furniture moving, flooring removal, subfloor pre etc. We offer comprehensive estimates.

Pros

  • Value: As the old saying goes, value is not what you pay; it’s what you get. Hardwood flooring not only provides unmatched value but also enhances the value of your home.
  • Air Quality: Hardwood, recommended for allergy sufferers, doesn't trap allergens and offers easy visibility for quick cleanup.
  • Easy Maintenance: Light sweeping and a very light damp mopping can keep the floors looking great for years.
  • Aesthetic: With the number of options and the natural feel, hardwood is the most beautiful flooring option.

Cons

  • TLC: Hardwood, being a natural product, demands more care. Avoid dragging items, use felt leg protectors under furniture, keep pet nails trimmed, and clean regularly.
  • Cost: The cost of genuine hardwood floors may be more than the imitators, but in the end, you will find it is worth it.
  • Not Waterproof: Barring major insurance-related issues, like a broken pipe, this should not be a concern and shouldn't discourage you from choosing hardwood flooring.

Why buy hardwood?

There is pride of ownership of hardwood. While other flooring types may visually mimic hardwood, there is no replacement for the real thing. Hardwood floors add a natural beauty to your home and in addition actually enhance the value of your home.

What are my options regarding hardwood floors?

Hardwood floors offer a large selection of options. From the type of species, which dictates color, hardness, and graining, to the width and length of the plank. There is a hardwood floor for every décor in every home.

What is engineered hardwood?

Engineered hardwood is the preference of most companies and customers today. Utilizing cross-ply construction as a platform, the wood veneer is then adhered to that to create dimensional stability which allows for installation in most any climate. It enhances the performance of the product without diminishing the options. Because these products are factory finished, the evenness of the finish and strength of the finished product is exceptional and performs at a high level.

Will I be able to refinish an engineered hardwood floor?

That will depend on the thickness of the veneer. In most cases, you will have an option to do a screen and recoat on a thinner veneer, while you may be able to do a full re-finish on thicker veneers. With the quality of the factory finishes today, this is less of an issue, as the finish lasts for a very long time.

Does Baker Bros install solid hardwood?

Currently, we do not. The dry climate in Arizona really lends itself to engineered hardwood.

How can I best maintain my hardwood floors?

Keeping them free of dirt and debris is the best start. Use walk-off mats in every doorway to keep particles from scratching and indenting them. Regular sweeping, vacuuming, or dust-mopping will keep hardwood floors clean and free of debris. We recommend not introducing heat and moisture as this may damage your floor.

How long does hardwood acclimation take?

Hardwood products typically need a minimum acclimation period of 72 hours. During acclimation, arrange hardwood boxes to allow equal airflow for consistent moisture adjustment. Stacking boxes no more than 4 high and leaving space around all sides helps proper air circulation.

How can I protect hardwood floors from furniture scratches?

While hardwood floors are naturally resistant, using small felt pads on furniture legs minimizes the risk of scratches. Area rugs provide cushioning and protection, preserving the beauty of your hardwood floors.

What is the difference between painting, staining, and refinishing?

In hardwood flooring, "staining" darkens the color, "finishing" applies varnish and sealant, and "refinishing" redoes the current finish. These processes can be challenging, so professional assistance is wise, especially for those unfamiliar with the tasks.

What is the installation time for hardwood floors?

Hardwood floors need time to acclimate—typically 72 hours. The installation process adds extra time depending on factors like room size. Trust experienced professionals, like Baker Bros, for a seamless installation.
