Planning Your Next Project?

Selecting the right countertop can transform your kitchen's look and usability. Consider your personal style, material durability, and maintenance needs when making your choice.

Countertop Considerations:

Material Types

There are 3 main types of material to choose from: Granite, Quartz, and Porcelain.

  • Granite is a durable natural stone with unique design visuals that cannot be replicated by other surfaces. It requires minimal maintenance, is resistant to stains, heat, and chips, and has an unparalleled textural design.
  • Quartz is a popular choice for countertops. It's an engineered stone made by combining natural quartz crystals and resin binders, which makes it highly resistant to scratches, chips, and cracks.
  • Porcelain countertops are a new, durable, and water-resistant option. Color options are increasing, as are widths and edge details.

Slab Thickness

Granite and quartz slabs come in 2cm and 3cm options. 3cm is more durable and allows for more edge detail options. Porcelain slabs come in 6mm and 12mm options, which is less than half the thickness of granite and quartz.

Edge Detail

There are different edge detail options such as eased, bullnose, square, and bevel. With today’s 3cm slabs, there is no longer a need for laminated edges which keep the visual of your counter smooth and sleek. Finally, while not technically an edge, one of today’s most popular finishes is a waterfall, where the slab material is continued down the ends to the floor.

Installation and Budget

Countertops need professional installation for both creation and fitting. Prices vary based on slab diversity, with 3cm slabs generally pricier than 2cm. Costs for a standard kitchen (75-100 sf) start at $100 per square foot. Additionally, hiring a licensed plumber is advisable for sink and disposal installations.

Pros

  • Extreme durability: Resistant to chips and scratches.
  • High heat and stain resistance.
  • Unique aesthetics: Each slab has distinct veining and movement.
  • No two slabs are identical, creating a one-of-a-kind visual appeal.

Cons

  • Annual sealing is required for maintenance.
  • Difficult to repair: While durable, repairs can be challenging.
  • Visible seams due to the unique nature of each slab.

Pros

  • Exceptional durability: Resistant to scratching, cracking, and chipping.
  • Non-porous surface: Stain-resistant and easy to maintain.
  • Consistent visual appearance across slabs: Easier matching for seamless installations.

Cons

  • Heat resistant, not heat proof: Avoid placing hot pots directly on the surface.
  • Not suitable for outdoor use: Limited to indoor applications.

Pros

  • Heat endurance: Can withstand hot pots without significant risk.
  • Excellent UV ray resistance: Reduces fading from prolonged sun exposure.
  • Hard and scratch-resistant surface.

Cons

  • Susceptible to cracking with significant impact despite surface hardness.
  • Thinner slabs compared to quartz and granite, limiting edge detail options.
