There are 3 main types of material to choose from: Granite, Quartz, and Porcelain.
Slab Thickness
Granite and quartz slabs come in 2cm and 3cm options. 3cm is more durable and allows for more edge detail options. Porcelain slabs come in 6mm and 12mm options, which is less than half the thickness of granite and quartz.
Edge Detail
There are different edge detail options such as eased, bullnose, square, and bevel. With today’s 3cm slabs, there is no longer a need for laminated edges which keep the visual of your counter smooth and sleek. Finally, while not technically an edge, one of today’s most popular finishes is a waterfall, where the slab material is continued down the ends to the floor.
Installation and Budget
Countertops need professional installation for both creation and fitting. Prices vary based on slab diversity, with 3cm slabs generally pricier than 2cm. Costs for a standard kitchen (75-100 sf) start at $100 per square foot. Additionally, hiring a licensed plumber is advisable for sink and disposal installations.
